I'm not going to spoil actual plot points here but there will be general spoilage
Changes is really rather wonderful but leaves you feeling in need of a nice cup of tea and a lie down.
The pace rackets along as Harry fights to rescue an innocent child from the evil clutches of the Red Court.
And Chicago's finest, despite the best efforts of Murphy, hamper him at every turn because they think he's turned into Barnabas
Along the way he is assisted and thwarted by the usual suspects and the quest costs him dearly on very many levels. Just when he thinks he's lost everything he has to lose .... well let's just say and leave it at that.
We learn more about The Grey Court and the Ways which link this world to the Nevernever, find out how Thomas is doing since the events of Turncoat and discover some unexpected things about characters we thought we knew.
Oh and there's some hot and more than slightly S+M sex with a rather surprising character
After a series of dramatic events ( and more than a little Ick) leave Harry wounded and exhausted he is forced to get hold of additional magical power if he is to stand any chance of completing his quest and he is desperate enough not to count the cost
Toot gets pizza and a promotion, Mouse and Mister have roles to play and, as we reach the magnificent final battle all three Swords of the Knights of The Cross are matched with the power of The Blackstaff, the assistance of a Fairy Godmother and a good dose of sacrifice and heroism in the face of overwhelming odds
Unfortunately there is also treachery and betrayal
Everything hinges on stopping the completion of a deadly ritual or of altering the outcome and Harry has promised that everyone will return home at the end... unfortunately returning alive isn't necessarily part of the deal
And in the end... I'm not telling you what happens but you'll be and and But with a side order of because we know that this isn't the last book in the series
Quite how the frilly heck Jim is going to manage to untangle the next one I know not.
But he'd better!
And that right soon _________________ "if people want to talk about whom I've dated, then I'd say they have a lot of spare time and should consider other topics... or masturbation - Johnny Depp"

How naughty! 45 people had read deborah's spoiler review and I wasn't one of them!
Until now. Because I finished Changes at 5am this morning. But not tired ( yet) because I was dying to get up and write my thoughts.

Absolutely

There can never be enough Thomas, and again here there wasn't. But I rejoice in knowing that Jim will have to write a very Thomas-centric book pretty soon to clear a heap of things up.
I'm not sure if you felt the same way, Deborah, but a couple of significant things were revealed in this book that very much pertained to or would have affected Thomas, yet Harry didn't give him a second thought! That peeved me A LOT! But made me think it could change his course when they address it in a future book.
So many things are being set up in this book. Not just for Harry, but for everyone. And conversations that I wanted to be followed through, weren't because there simply wasn't time to discuss things. Jim has so many more paths to use in the next books.

That was my first really big WHOA! I knew he'd have to stock up from somewhere, but was still shocked. And from that I thought we'd definitely know what the next book would be about but after the book ended .....???

Awww, surprising? I think Mac and Harry make a really cute couple.

LOVE Mouse. Absolutely adore him, even more now. There's one description of him in the book which sent shivers up my spine. We will definitely see a big story involving Mouse.
Mysterious Mister. Hmmmmmmmm ......

Not sure what you thought, but for me that outcome was the only thing that was glaringly obvious from the start.
Without telling you who was alive and who was dead at the end ....
Molly was waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy less annoying in this book.
The fanboys all seem to hate Susan, but I thought her character was pretty good in this book.
Liked Murphy. They cut out some of the saccarine schmaltz between her and Harry from previous books, which has always bothered me and simply got on with the task at hand.
The monsters, demons and baddies were excellent. Usually a few of them leave me a bit meh, but I did think they were a varied and interesting lot, who I'd very much like Jim to revisit in future books.
The What Not To Wear bit annoyed me. Too frivolous at too crucial a time.
Harry's accumulation of power in this book is pretty impressive. But at a huge cost!
Yay Bob! Can't wait for his big story too.
The Drusilla Eeb cracked me up.
The Swords: - Another thing that always seems to excite the fanboys and they were making all sorts of predictions about who would take up the swords etc etc. I'm glad Jim made the decisions he did.
And I must add that for 75 - 80% of the book I kept on thinking that I'd liked Turn Coat more, but that last part of the book was really fabulous. Excellent climax and the twists kept on twisting. Hence keeping on reading until 5am. _________________ LAMENT: Chapter 21: - 16505 words |

indeed. Even when it became clear it was kind of inevitable, I still kept believing he wouldn't... and then he did. Definitely a big shock. For me, maybe even the biggest of the entire book (and there were quite a few of them!) |
